GTA 6 Money System Explained: Bank, Cash and Loot
GTA 6 splits your money into a bank balance, cash on hand and loot value, and only one of the three is safe if you get caught.
GTA 5 kept things simple: one number, always yours. A hands-on Rockstar North preview shows GTA 6 splitting money into three separate forms, and the difference between them is not cosmetic, it changes what you actually risk every time you go out to earn.
The three forms of money
Bank balance
The safe number. According to the preview, this is reported to be shared between Jason and Lucia, though it is unclear whether that sharing is active from the start of the story or unlocks later. Depositing physical cash requires visiting an ATM in person: there is no phone banking for cash deposits, only for other banking tasks like payments and transfers.
Cash on hand
What you are actually carrying. This is the money you lose if you are busted or wasted before banking it, which makes an unplanned trip to an ATM after a good haul more than just convenience.
Loot value
Stolen goods you have not converted to cash yet, shown separately when you are carrying something like a duffel bag. This is not spendable money: it has to go through a fence first.
What this changes about how you play
Money is no longer just a number that goes up. Carrying a big haul through a hostile part of the map is a real risk in a way it rarely was before, and the split between the three types means a good night can still end with nothing banked if you get caught before reaching an ATM or a fence. If you are being chased with cash on you, our guide to losing the police in GTA 6 matters more than usual.
For how to turn these forms of money into a plan, start with GTA 6 money basics. Big hauls usually come from a heist, and the way you commit crimes feeds the Criminal Profile.

Reported to be cash on hand only. Your bank balance stays safe, and loot value you have not sold yet is presumably lost along with the cash, though that has not been detailed directly.
