How to Lose the Police in GTA 6

GTA 6 keeps the star meter, but it changes what happens underneath it. A hands-on preview at Rockstar North showed a new heat mechanic and a set of star colours that tell you exactly what the police know, which changes how you should actually respond.

Heat vs wanted level

A wanted star is the police actively looking for you. Heat is what they remember afterwards. Committing a crime does not automatically trigger a star: something has to alert them first, a witness, an alarm, a tracker. If nothing does, the crime still happened and can still affect your Criminal Profile, but the police simply never found out.

What the star colours mean

Under the stars, separate icons show exactly what the police have identified: your face, your outfit, your vehicle, your weapon, or the fact that Jason and Lucia were seen acting as a pair. There is also a CCTV indicator if security footage caught you.

The method

1. Break line of sight. Tunnels, multi storey car parks, dense alleys and tree cover all count, and the police vision cones from older games are gone, so use focus if you need to track them through a wall while hiding.
2. Deal with what they actually know. Check which icons are showing under your stars and clear those specifically: new outfit, new car, stashed weapon, or simply putting distance between you and Jason or Lucia if you were seen together.
3. Get outside the search zone. The map shows a darker inner zone and a lighter outer one. Clearing both matters more than outrunning anyone.
4. Respray a hot vehicle. Paying for a respray removes the vehicle description entirely, a mechanic returning from GTA 4.
5. Use water at high heat. Hiding underwater still works, though how deep and how clear the water is affects how well it hides you.

Six stars

At six stars, the search stops being local. According to the preview, the police search the entire map rather than one neighbourhood, and other creators who saw this level described it as very difficult to shake. Rockstar has not detailed exactly what changes at that point.

What does not work

• Driving in a straight line at top speed while they still have visual on you.
• Fighting at three stars or higher. Reinforcements outpace your ammunition.
• Going back to a location you were just seen fleeing from.
